Magpie - two in-off to wooden jetty (didn't see them until about 300m to NW over the sea) then inland after some hopping about
Little Grebe - one fence pond Middleton getting chased around by a solitary Coot
Water Rail - 2 squealing western marsh reedbed Middleton
Gadwall - male model boat pond (but no sign of the male Pochard - grrr)
Negative on Med Gull - no sign of Czech-ringed bird in thorough check at high tide with an e.g. full quota of Black-headed Gull on Fisher's roof roost. Fractionally earlier than usual to depart - last seen North Harbour Wall on Wednesday.
Coot - 2 model boat pond, one fence pond
Little Egret - 3 Red Nab
Wigeon - 136 Red Nab
Skylark - 3 NNE over office 1040hrs
The observatory was set up in 1980. It involves ringing,'vis mig' counts (including seabirds) and general monitoring in the Heysham Nature reserve/power stations/harbour area. The statutory moth trap is in place and also a daily log for butterflies, dragonflies etc. We share an office, kindly provided by EDF Energy, with the County Wildlife Trust. This is located next to the Nature Reserve car park. Do call in. Please leave sightings in the letterbox, ESPECIALLY 'fly-by' seabirds.
